Food Law Student Leadership Summit – Application Instructions and Requirements

The Harvard Food Law and Policy Clinic (FLPC) is excited to host the first Food Law Student Leadership Summit, which will provide a forum for training, networking, and engagement among law students interested in food law and policy.

The Summit will be held October 2-4, 2015 at Harvard Law School in Cambridge, Massachusetts.

*Update* The application for the Food Law Student Leadership Summit has been closed and all accepted students have been notified. We were thrilled at the overwhelming interest and look forward to welcoming a diverse group of students from 50 different law schools to HLS in a few weeks.

About the Food Law Student Leadership Summit

The Food Law Student Leadership Summit is the first conference to convene law students from around the country with a passion for food law and policy. Participants will hear from national experts about key food law and policy issues related to the environment, health, food safety, and food waste; develop strategies to start or expand student food law organizations; build a national network of food law and policy colleagues; and begin to develop coordinated strategies for addressing some of society’s most pressing food law and policy concerns.

The Food Law Student Leadership Summit aims to:

  • Convene a national forum of law students with a demonstrated interest in food law;
  • Educate students on the basic legal frameworks that apply to food and the ways in which the legal system can influence the food system, using elements of the curriculum the FLPC teaches to Harvard Law students;
  • Engage students in hands-on learning around some of the key areas of food law via tours, activities, and simulations;
  • Identify new and creative research and actions that can be undertaken by law students to produce better food system outcomes locally, regionally, nationally, and internationally; and
  • Create an active, networked community of student food law societies and future food law leaders who commit their energy, creativity, idealism, and legal skills to improving the food system.

 Travel to and from Boston, accommodations in Cambridge, as well as meals during the Summit will be provided. Participants will stay at Le Meridien in Central Square.

We welcome applications from any law student (JD and LLM students) at a U.S. law school. We seek students that are involved in a food law student organization or are interested in starting a food law student organization; have demonstrated experience in food law and policy; and possess strong leadership skills. To convene a diverse group of students, we will limit the number of participants accepted from each law school.

A limited number of spots are available. We will review applications on a rolling basis beginning in June, and advise interested students to apply early. Admitted students will be notified no later than September 4 so that travel arrangements can be promptly made.
